The new solo album from one of the UK’s finest beatheads. The first full length Mad Dr X release on Hydrofunk follows up classic albums on Ninja Tune and Son Records plus featured tracks on the first Resin Dogs EP Grinnin’. Review from May 2002 MAD DOCTOR X – Chillonometry (Hydrofunk/Virgin) As the title suggests, Chillonometry is essentially a hip-hop-chill-out album. On his third album, this being the first released under the Hydrofunk label, Mad Doctor X delivers a diverse chill out tunes drawing on jazz, reggae, and breakbeat sounds making for a hip hop album akin to the likes of Rae and Christian. The album features an assortment of talented vocalists and emcee’s including Sandino, Mercee, Jo Morgan, T.C. Izlam, William George, as well as Navigator, Tenor Fly and Voyager. With a line up like that and some fierce album cover artwork by our own Pitty The Kidd, I’m ready to be impressed. Chillonometry begins with Narcotic Pt. 1, a quiet track with considerable attitude. The album then progresses through a variety of instrumental tracks, evenly spread amongst those with vocals resulting in an album that is highly tolerable for listening the whole way through – that is, providing you have the whole 73 minutes of that listening pleasure to spare….and if you don’t, I urge you to make the time… My personal favourite of the album is Swimmer Girl featuring the soulful vocals of Jo Morgan – a sexy track that’s as soothing as Show Me, in contrast to the ruffness but by no means less powerful Things That I See, featuring Tenor Fly, Sandrino and Mercee – the female MC adding an impressive touch. Whatever featuring L.P., Navigator and T.C. Izlam is a groovy number amongst some guitar-organ-piano-flute-scratching stylee displaying the diverse nature of the beatmaking flair of Mad Doctor X. Golem picks the pace up for some gracious breakbeat that keeps in line with the refined mood of the entire album. This is a hip hop album with class. Pure class. Perfect for those long trips home, and those big nights in. Check it. Dig it. Love it.
